Crowded Head? Make Some Space for this Moment...

You know how you feel when you have a stuffy head? Cold, tired, run down- not very productive…well, the same thing is true when you have a crowded head- mind filled with too much mental clutter- tired, run down, not very productive.

'Crowded Head Syndrome' is very common these days. No it’s not a technical medical term, and NO NO NO I am definitely not giving another name for something as an excuse, just saying a lot of people are running around with a lot running around their minds. I get it. I’ve lived it, and there are days, let me tell you, where I literally have to dump it all out onto paper, make an airplane out of it, and wave goodbye. It is a very refreshing exercise, and I do feel totally energized afterwards!

Ok, I digress.

So, when are minds are crowded, what is it exactly that we are thinking about?

-    Money
-    Time
-    To-do Lists
-    Family
-    Friends
-    The Past
-    The Future
-    The List Goes On and On…

But, no matter what it is, I can tell you one thing we are definitely NOT thinking about:

The Present Moment.

Here’s the deal: there is infinite power in the present moment, but if we are too crowded mentally to be in the moment, we lose out on all of that power. We miss beauty. We miss life. We miss opportunity. We miss connecting.

To get back in the moment, begin by focusing on what is right immediately in front of you. Is it your paper Starbucks coffee cup? Study it. Only notice the cup- do not let your mind go anywhere else but the shape, texture, print on the cup. Pour your passion into this moment whatever this moment is, for it is all we really have. Nothing else exists but NOW.

A Woman Who Loves Life is the Most Beautiful Woman in the World!!

I am taking a stand against women feeling "less than" because of their size, their hair color, their financial situation, their lack of a man...I think a woman who just plain old loves life is the most beautiful woman in the world, regardless of all that junk!!

I know the "feeling less than"- I've been there, done that, and can probably write an entire book about it, but it would be B-O-R-I-N-G. The bottom line is that you don't need to look a certain way, wear a certain label, have a certain someone to be absolutely beautiful from the inside-out. You don't need to even have "found your purpose".

There is one simple way to glow, and that is to put passion into everything you do. Then, your purpose will unfold naturally, you don't have to work hard like a bull to figure it out. People will come into your life because your passion and love for life brings them to you!! You will take care of yourself, because we nurture what we love.

I am inspired by many women, all of which share this one thing in common: they are passionate about life. These are the 'women who rock' in my book!! And this is (in essence) the definition of an "inspirista". So, today, my favorite blog readers, put LOVE into everything you do, you say, you see. Judge nothing, not even yourself. Look at the world through a passionate lens!

Simple. Practical. Totally Healthy. Quick Tip.

Remember my LAUNDRY rule: Be as careful with your body as you are with your laundry! Think about it- we separate our whites from darks, we don't mix towels with delicates, but we are so quick to put unnatural foods into our bodies that wreak havoc on our well-being. Food is fuel- it should have function AND flavor! Natural, fresh foods taste great and fill our bodies with nutrients that protect us, energize us, and improve our mood. With our busy schedules, what could be better than that?

Zen Quickie: Give What You Want to Receive

We've all heard the phrase, "you get what you give." But, more than just words, there is a lot of truth in the statement. Think about it, we actually give of ourselves every minute. Every thought, every action, every thing we do is sending a signal, whether we realize it or not!

So, if you think your spouse is not good at communicating, instead of "retreating" and matching his/her energy level, choose to be a better communicator yourself. If you think a co-worker is nasty, don't roll your eyes back, just be genuinely nice to him/her. If you want to have a body you love, love your body. If someone is frowning, give them a smile. We tend to easily let others bring us down, and match their negativity energy. Instead, raise the bar high and let others get lifted by you!

Bye-bye Fear, Hello Hope!

I know it's hard to just let go of our fears, put them on a bus and wave goodbye, but by focusing on faith and hope instead of fear and despair, we open the door to all good things!! Remember, where there is faith, fear can not exist. Keep these 2 things in mind, and you'll be sure to untangle yourself from the worry web:

* Relinquish Control

Being fearful is just another way we try to control our lives. It’s like our hair- if it’s curly, we work hard to make it straight, but one drop of humidity or rain and we realize we can’t control everything! Life can be filled with so much more joy if we can even cut our worry in half. So, relinquish your fear and let go of all that negative energy. You’ll transmit a positive signal, and get a positive response from the world!

*Detach, Don’t Stress Over the Results

When we really want something, we tend to focus too hard on it. This means we get caught up in trying to figure out “how” to make it happen. We wait and anticipate results quickly, and if it doesn’t happen, we get discouraged. All of this creates stress and negativity, so the Universe will respond with more stress and negativity. We’ve got to detach ourselves, and just hold strong to the positive images in our minds. The question is not “if”, it’s “when”. Instead of working hard, work smart by taking inspired action! Trust, be your best self, and align every action, every thought- God will do his good works and deliver!

Here's One Quick Tip About Time, and How to Find More of It!!

Managing your time is not a science of learning how to juggle more and better and faster. Rather, it’s about doing less. It’s about taking a good hard look at how you spend your time and making choices about whether or not you want to continue to spend your time in this way. It’s about delegating. It’s about saying, “No” to some things and “Yes!” to others. It’s about rearranging your day, so you get things done more efficiently.

It’s about getting the right things done in the right amount of time- "right" that is, for YOU!! Remember, you set the terms!

Once you do this, you will no longer feel crunched for time. Rather, you’ll feel calmer, have higher quality relationships, have more energy, and experience better health. Your life will open up to limitless possibilities! You’ll find time for that art class you’ve been wanting to take, that movie you’ve been dying to watch, the date you and your husband have been planning for the last 2 years. Yes, it’s true. By taking control of your time, you will be able to do all of those things, and then some! Exciting, isn’t it?

Adding In vs. Taking Away

Sometimes when we are aware that we'd like to make a change, we think about all the things we've done "wrong" or we have to "stop doing". Especially this time of year, I know alot of people who are just plain old beating themselves up in the name of "motivation".

I say, flip your focus to what you want to "add into" your life vs. what you want to "take away". I mean, it is both frustrating and an energy drainer to worry about the things you have to give up! Once you start adding healthy, happy, authentic behaviors in your life, your body and mind will crave more of them, and more of them will flow naturally into your life!

Let's look at some examples:

"Take Away Mentality": I have to give up sweets. "Add In Mentality": I will eat more veggies.

"Take Away Mentality": I have to fight less with my partner. "Add In Mentality": I will love and communicate with my partner.

"Take Away Mentality": I have to lose this job and do something I really love. "Add In Mentality": I will put passion into whatever I am doing.

I think you get my drift.

Keep it simple. Write a list for yourself of ten great additions to your daily life and practice them one by one! Remember, we reap what we sow -this applies to our thoughts as they align with our actions! Our energy is like an echo- we get back what we put out there...are you thinking thoughts of limitations or possibilties? I prefer possibilities- so much more fun that way!!

Where's the Map?

I'll never forget when I was in high school my family decided to take a road trip to North Carolina. My father is very reminiscent of Chevy Chase in Family Vacation, so he was super-excited, planned every detail, and had itineraries, maps, and roadstops all mapped out ahead of time. What he didn't figure into his calculations was the fact that we would all fall asleep during the ride, so he didn't have anyone to help navigate.

A couple of missed turns, and we were in the car for an extra couple of hours!! Now, I'm sure he wasn't the happiest when he was trying to figure out how to get us back on course, but, what happened was we ended up near a place called "South of the Border" 2 hours later right when it opened. In my father's original mapped-out plan, we would have never made it there- we would have been too early. As it turned out, our family had an absolute blast at the place that we may have never got to if his plan worked perfectly.

I think, in life, we all try to do this in some way, shape, or form. We work hard, we plan, we think we know exactly where we’re going. But I believe sometimes ‘life’ happens best when we get lost. I believe we learn the most lessons when the unexpected happens. I think we connect more to each other, to nature, to real happiness when we are left with a "failed plan."

It's great to have a vision- where we want to go, and of course, taking (and somewhat planning) the steps along the way. But, the next time your roadmap takes you to a detour that throws you off course, trust in the absolute power that life has a beautiful way of unfolding perfectly as it should, and if you hold tight to your vision, the map may just be revealed one step at a time.

Oh So Simple. Delicious. Totally Healthy. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies!!

There's one thing you must know about me- I LOVE FOOD!! While I thoroughly enjoy my vegetables, I will not be found chomping on celery and carrot sticks and calling it a day- oh no!! I must have some sweets, too. But, of course, I realize food is fuel, and should nourish our bodies, right?

After all, food affects everything we do, see, speak, feel- food correlates directly to our energy level, our stress level, our mood, our attitude. So, since I am foodie, I like to find simple ways to enjoy the foods I love without worrying about my blood sugars going all whacky.

One of my all-time favorites is this Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. I was experimenting one day as we were preparing for a Lunch 'n Learn program, and the VP had a special cookie request. After much trial and error, here's the recipe that made the plate:

Oh-So-Simple Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 Cup Organic Wheat Flour
1 Tablespoon Pure Vanilla Extract
1 Egg
1 Cup Dark Chocolate Chips
¾ Cup Organic Cane Sugar
¾ Cup Organic Rolled Oats
½ Teaspoon Salt
½ Teaspoon Baking Soda
¼ Cup Canola Oil
¼ Cup No Sugar Added Applesauce

Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat 2 baking sheets with cooking spray. Grind oats in a blender or food processor. Transfer to a medium bowl and stir in flour, baking soda and salt. Beat mixture in a large bowl with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add applesauce, oil, organic cane sugar, egg and vanilla; beat until smooth and creamy. With the mixer running, add the dry ingredients, beating on low speed until just combined.

Drop the dough by heaping teaspoonfuls, at least 1 inch apart, onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake cookies, 1 sheet at a time, until firm around the edges and golden on top, about 15 minutes. Cool the cookies for 2 minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

2 Simple Reasons Why Diets Don't Work...

3 out of 4 women have been on a diet…
90% of women gain at least 50% of the weight they lose back within 1 year!!
80% of American women are unhappy with the way they look.
70% of women feel out of balance, even Oprah says it’s the one thing she craves.
“Balance” is the Missing Key to Losing Weight Permanently.

I think we are all pretty aware that diets don't work, but why is this? I think there are two reasons to consider: #1 There is a flaw in the plan. There is a flaw with the way you lost the weight. Perhaps the diet was too restrictive, or you starved yourself. Maybe you over exercised and couldn't maintain that routine. Please remember- any change you make must be seamless into your lifestyle!!  Look, most people may lose weight initially. Diets may work temporarily if you follow them!  But how many times have you lost and gained back the same ten pounds?

The second reason why diets don’t work is that we can get a little lax with self-monitoring.We get caught up in life, stress, busyness, and we don't quickly reverse small changes! I'm not a fan of the scale- I say throw the darn thing away!! But, if we use our favorite jeans as a monitor- try them on every Saturday. If they're tight, let's not blame the dryer for shrinking them. Just drink more water, eat whole, natural foods, add in more veggies. The jeans should fit fine again in a couple of days.

You see, I believe we are more than numbers on a scale, but we have to hold ourself accountable for our well-being. It affects everything we do. Remember, self-care is not selfish, it's a necessity to be our best selves when taking care of everyone else!!

I mastered the art of losing weight.  I've been on every diet from A-Z. Tried them all. I lost 60 pounds in a few months. But I ALWAYS gained it back, and sometimes I'd gain back more than I lost. I dreaded family parties when I was "up" and couldn't wait to see friends and family when I was "down". I'm sure you all know the feeling. Finally, I realized, to avoid being one of the 90% of women who gain it back, we have to avoid extreme plans for losing, and also self-monitor to quickly reverse small gains. It's all about finding balance. And, this for, was truly life changing.

Words I suggest be removed from your vocabulary:

1) diet (i.e I'm trying this great new diet)

2) start (i.e. I will start on Monday)

3) cheated (i.e. I was bad, I cheated. Listen up, you're bad if you rob a bank not if you eat a cookie!)

I believe we can both psych ourselves up and psych ourselves out when we feel we are dieting! We get very excited to begin the diet, but when we are tempted by that ice cream, chocolate or cake, we give in for the moment and then get discouraged.  We can easily lose our dedication and focus, think we cheated, go off for 4 days and then wait until Monday to start again.

Fad diets are diets that offer "quick" results. Often fad diets are based on eliminating whole, entire food groups. It sounds good in theory- to lose 20 pounds this month, and how hard could it be? It might not be hard temporarily, but are you ready to live without carbohydrates forever? Traditional diets are based on cutting out calories. This can be difficult if you are measuring every calorie that you take in. You'd be a slave to measuring things on a dieter's scale. Also, if you cut your calories too low, you risk going into starvation. And as we now know can slow your metabolism down.  Both types of diets are great in theory. But we have to learn what's realistic and what you can truly apply into our lifestyle.

I'm not saying the "diet" itself doesn't work. Please understand there are many brilliant books and plans available to us that have been tested with proven results. It's not the "diets" that fail us, it is what I call "the dieter's mentality". We all know the perfect pair is nutrition and exercise!! There are no magic pills; just acquire healthy habits, find your own meaning for balance, enjoy life, enjoy the taste of natural, fresh food and how it makes you feel rather than worry about what it does to the scale. We deserve to be healthy, we deserve to nourish our bodies- it's just that simple!!

The Student and The Teacher

Just as we are all students throughout life, we are all teachers.  And, what’s interesting is we teach what we most want to learn. Sometimes we teach so we don’t forget something that we had an issue with, like health, finances, stress, self-esteem, and so on. We often go into these fields not as a teacher, but as a lifelong student willing to share what we learn.

But, you know, I believe some of the greatest teachers don’t realize they are teaching at all. It may just be in conversation, a light bulb goes off with a brilliant moment of awareness that sheds light onto something not only for the person, but for everyone else around them. Or, it may be in actions- observing the way someone "is".  I mean, parents are a great example of this. A mother may tell her child, "Be kind to people." But, it's far more impactful for a child to observe her mother actually being kind to people. We don't realize it, but we are in a constant state of teaching and learning just by "being".

You see, I believe education can happen through words, in writing, of course, which may lead to the reader inspiring him/herself to action. I mean, heck, I’m a writer, so if I don’t believe that I may as well throw away the pen, right? But, I believe real teaching happens in experiences, just as real learning happens by experiencing. Written words may inspire an action, but don’t sell yourself short, it is you behind the action that is the true teacher. It is you behind the experience that is life’s student.

A Life Wish by Raphaella Vaisseau

Just a beautiful poem I wanted to share with you, my favorite blog readers, written by Raphaella Vaisseau!!!

May the days and years ahead of you be filled with

OPENINGS

that you may sense clearly the path you choose to walk;

VISION

that you may see, search, and dream without limitation;

SENSITIVITY

that you may hear and follow your own inner guidance,
discern when to act on behalf of yourself and/or others,
and when to simply be and let be;

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

that you may taste the fruit of success; and,

POSSIBILITIES

that you may discover what you want and need,
know who you are, give to others of your heart’s joy,
have the courage to stand for your own convictions,
and believe in yourself no matter what!
